Before becoming a working British male voiceover, it was often commented to me that I had an excellent telephone manner. My mother worked for many years in secretarial roles and often answered the phone at home as well.

Looking back, these early voiceover skills, which I absorbed listening to her, definitely helped in my modern languages and journalism degrees, my radio broadcasting career, and latterly my work as a UK voiceover artist.

This small film for Aptamil follow-on milk was about a father looking after his daughter, while his wife returned to work.

To achieve intimacy and naturalness in her phone call to him, I recorded my lines with my phone to my ear. Listening to the actress’s previously recorded parts, I then spoke mine where necessary.

Though I never met the female voiceover artist, I think we did our best as parents – and conveyed the right feelings for the film and the brand.
